    The Peraia of Samothrace Project: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to the Diachronic Landscape of the Peraia of Samothrace

    This paper presents the 2020–2022 fieldwork results of the Peraia of Samothrace Project (PSP), a multi-disciplinary archaeological project using non-invasive methods such as remote sensing, geophysical prospection, and intensive pedestrian field walking to investigate the diachronic patterns of human occupation within the landscape opposite the island of Samothrace in the North Aegean. In Classical Antiquity, this region was known in literary sources as the Peraia of Samothrace because of the fortified settlements established there by the island beginning in the 6th century BCE. In the broader context of Thrace, the Peraia served as the crossroads between Europe and Asia and the North Aegean and the Black Sea. One target is to provide insights into the Thracians and their habitation patterns, as well as their relationships with the Greek settlers. Another goal is to develop an appreciation of the earlier (Prehistory) and later phases (Byzantine, Ottoman) of the Peraia. The project focuses on the coastal and inland regions stretching between Mt Ismaros, near ancient Maroneia, and east towards the ancient settlement of Zone. At Petrota beach, a previously unknown Greek and Roman settlement, possibly fortified, was documented. A short distance inland to the north, in an area known as Mikros Elaionas, a diverse assemblage of local and Greek ceramics, including Attic black glaze, as well as Late Roman and Byzantine material suggests a prolonged history of human activity. Elsewhere, along a known section of the Via Egnatia near the village of Komaros, the project documented numerous Roman Imperial surface finds together with buried architectural remains. These are likely from a Roman way station along the Via Egnatia. Nearby and attesting to the diverse assemblage of material in the Peraia, the project found evidence of Neolithic activity.
