Research Methodology

Depending on the conditions and diagnostic of each AOI, we will operate with a combination of methods, such as intensive surface survey, manifold geophysical prospection, satellite and aerial sensing, aerial photography, etc. Autopsies will help determine the appropriate time for the surface and geophysical survey based on the crops and climatic conditions of each site.

In particular, AOI #1 and #2 will be explored with systematic surface- and geophysical survey across their entire length, because of their manageable size and the archaeological remains known from previous grab-surveys (site specific survey). AOI #3 and #4 are of large size consisting of diverse properties and thus, a different approach is necessary (siteless survey). Depending on the results of the surface survey, we will proceed to targeted geophysical survey of specific sections. Additionally, both the AOI within the peraia of Samothrace and the wider geographical unit of Aegean Thrace will be investigated through satellite imagery and aerial photographs.
